Will AI replace your front office? Here's what the government's own data says

  • research
  • people and ai

It's the first question owners ask us, and usually the second thing their office manager wonders: is this going to replace someone?

We'd rather answer with data than with reassurance.

The Census Bureau asked American businesses

The US Census Bureau surveyed businesses between November 2025 and January 2026:

  • 18% of firms used AI in a business function.
  • Among firms using AI, 95.7% reported no change in headcount because of it over the previous six months. 2.3% added staff, and 2.0% reduced it.
  • "Most users (66%) rely on AI solely to augment tasks."

The researchers' summary: AI "currently functions primarily as a labor-augmenting technology."

The New York Fed found the same

In its August 2026 regional survey, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York found that:

  • 61% of service firms now use AI;
  • just over a third of those retrained workers;
  • about 13% hired more because of AI, and about 15% hired fewer.

Its conclusion: AI "has been more likely to augment workers than replace them."

The honest part

The same data shows the picture moving:

  • Layoffs tied to AI at service firms rose from 1% to 4% in a year.
  • The Census paper notes a gradual shift toward replacing more of some tasks.

So "so far" is the right qualifier.

That's why how you set it up matters more than whether you use it. You can point AI at the jobs nobody wants: voicemails at 7 pm, retyping a PDF order, the Spanish caller nobody on shift can help. Or you can point it at people. We do the first.

What that looks like in a small shop

  • Your office manager stops starting the day decoding voicemails and starts it with a written list: who called, what they need, how urgent.
  • Your dispatcher gets crews out earlier because the list is already sorted.
  • Your estimator gets the RFQ already typed in and sends the quote the same day.

Same people. More of the work that brings money in.

If you want to know what this would free up for your team, start with a 20-minute fit conversation.
